Feltonfleet is an independent school for girls and boys from 3 to 13 years old, located in the Green Belt estate in Cobham, Surrey. In April 2012 Walters & Cohen undertook a space audit and developed a masterplan for the school’s estate that recommended a three-phase building programme. The first two phases – refurbishment of the Grade II listed junior school and a 400-seat performing arts centre – were completed in 2015. The third and most complex phase, which is currently in progress, comprises a new music building, art and DT facilities, and the headteacher’s house.

Located on the site of the existing, inward-looking building, the music building is the most prominent development. The new facilities will contain a recital hall and rehearsal spaces with state-of-the-art acoustics, providing Feltonfleet with accommodation that matches its high quality music teaching. The building knits together existing parts of the site, and creates an attractive presence from the street in a palette of materials and to a scale that respect the listed red-brick building.

On another part of the school site, an art, DT and science hub will be created around a courtyard that opens out to the school’s playing fields and woodland. Flanking one side, the art and DT building will have light studio spaces and shield the school from the busy A3 road that bounds its estate. Enclosing the rest of the courtyard, refurbished science labs and meeting rooms will make this a dynamic learning hub. The head’s house will be relocated to a new four-bedroom bungalow in a more private corner of the school estate.
