In September 2016 Michál Cohen spoke at a conference in South Africa on the subject of twenty-first-century school design. Following the conference, Walters & Cohen was contacted by Somerset College, a co-educational independent school located on a beautiful and expansive estate in the Winelands of the Western Cape.
The school has commissioned us to undertake a masterplan that supports their long-term vision and more immediate needs, with particular focus on pre-prep, theatre, boarding and sports facilities, as well as providing a welcoming entrance, better access and parking, and improved offices for admin staff.
One of the school’s priorities is to create new accommodation for eSTEAM subjects (enterprise, science, technology, art and maths), co-locating them in one building to inspire innovative interdisciplinary study. We are currently designing spaces for thinking, inventing, testing and making: thinking and inventing may take place in classrooms on the first floor, while an innovation centre on the ground floor is well equipped with a 3D printer, laser cutters and other resources that promote creativity and experimentation.
