In early 2014 Walters & Cohen won an invited competition run by the Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair, London. The Athenaeum is a prestigious, family-owned hotel occupying a prominent site on Piccadilly, with an eight-storey high green wall on the corner of Piccadilly and Down Street. Our brief was to modernise the hotel frontage and reception area, improve visibility between the street and the lobby, provide welcoming access from pavement to hotel reception, and make better use of the reception area, bar, lounge and restaurant.

We undertook a feasibility study to explore several refurbishment options to make the Athenaeum Hotel a destination in London. Ideas for this included bringing more natural light into the reception area, strengthening the connection to the outdoors and creating a grander street presence from Piccadilly and Green Park, with outdoor seating available during the warmer months of the year. We also considered ways to retain and maximise the strong visual identity of the green wall.
