Following our award-winning refurbishment of Towers Junior School in 2010, we were reappointed in 2012 by the London Borough of Havering to deliver an extension to accommodate an increase from two-form to three-form entry. Our original refurbishment provided the school with a new, more welcoming identity as well as two cluster groups, each comprising a central ‘heart’ space and four adjoining classrooms.
Based on consultation with the local authority, governors, staff, parents, pupils and neighbours, the single storey new wing provides accommodation for a third cluster group for years three to six. Four generously proportioned classrooms surround a central resource space fitted with a cooking kiosk and ICT-rich infrastructure. This learning resource beyond the classroom provides an inspirational environment and encourages independent learning. It can also be opened separately from the rest of the school for secure use out of hours by after-school clubs or the local community.
All classrooms have direct access to the outside to promote outdoor learning and bring in natural light and ventilation.
