Feltonfleet is an independent school for girls and boys from 3 to 13 years old, located in the Green Belt in Cobham, Surrey. In April 2012 Walters & Cohen was appointed to advise on expanding the junior school accommodation.

We undertook a space audit and developed a masterplan, analysing how the accommodation was used and recommending a three-phase building programme: refurbish the existing junior school to provide the larger, more flexible classrooms desired by the school; build a new performing arts centre that links into the existing school; and extend the existing memorial hall to provide a new music department. This sequence of works gives the school great value for money as it provides the desired facilities while avoiding the need to decant into expensive temporary accommodation.

The first phase of works tackles the enclosed spaces in the Victorian Grade II listed junior school building, opening up the narrow, dark corridors and creating large classrooms with excellent natural light. At the front of the building a new, welcoming double volume reception area and two double volume classrooms present an attractive frontage to visitors, and a tarmac car park will be transformed into an attractive courtyard in front of the new main entrance.
