In 2016 we were asked to explore the feasibility of a new International College for the King’s School. The College will teach students aged 11-16, acting as a stepping-stone for those entering the English school system from abroad.

In consultation with the school we developed designs for a three-storey building that wraps around a private courtyard for socialising and outdoor learning. The building comprises 34 en-suite bedrooms to offer boarding for 80 students, several flats for staff, classrooms, and specialist teaching facilities.

The proposed building is located on Malthouse Road, which is separated from the main school estate by St Stephen’s Road and the River Great Stour. A masterplan of the area was undertaken to ensure that the International College knits in with plans for several complementary small-scale developments in the cul-de-sac. These proposals include five two-bedroom houses and a three-bedroom house for staff, gardens for students and staff, a new flood-lit sports court with a dedicated changing room building, and a separate project by another practice that comprises a 300-seat theatre, dining and teaching facilities in the existing Malthouse.

The new College creates a civic square shared with the Malthouse, bringing together the many elements of the 1.25 hectare site. The square will become an important space for meeting and socialising that complements the more private quad at the heart of the College. Domestic gardens bound two other sides of the College building, while to the north the new sports court will be used by the College, school and local community.

In March 2017, planning consent was granted with unanimous support from the planning committee.
