NLCS Old House

Turning an old house into a new home (ish)

Old House, a gorgeous Grade II listed Portland stone building with high ceilings and cornices, gave a grand first impression of NLCS as its reception. However, its location wasn’t the most practical. Our new building moves the reception to the school's busiest entrance, meaning Old House could be repurposed for sixth form students.

We wanted it to feel less like a thoroughfare and more like a home, as its name suggests, with a study and a sitting room. Joinery creates subtle separation without impinging on the historic features, and we swapped clunky furniture for tables, chairs and sofas that are more appropriate to the proportions of the spaces, practical, easy to move, and create the right atmosphere.

The furniture colour scheme pays homage to a historic mural, and student artwork cheers up the walls.
